今日、私は盆踊りに行きました。
盆踊りとは、日本の伝統的な夏の行事です。
中央の一段高い「やぐら（櫓）」の上で
太鼓が叩かれ、
その周りを人々が歩きながら
曲に合わせて踊ります。

I went out to the Bon festival today.
At the festival,
we dance the Bon dancing
that is the Japanese traditional event.
The drummer plays on the stage
in the center of the shrine’s yard,
and people dance to music
and step around the stage.

おばあさんも小さな子どもも踊ります。
日本人はふだん、洋服を着ていますが、
盆踊りの時は多くの人が「ゆかた（浴衣）」を着ます。
「ゆかた」とは
日本の伝統的な衣裳である着物の一種です。
ゆかたは薄手の布で仕立てられており、
主に夏場に用いられますが、
他にも、日本の旅先の宿では
一般的に寝巻き用として
宿泊する部屋に用意されています。

Even old people and little children dance.
Although Japanese usually wear western clothes,
when we dance at the Bon festival
many people wear a YUKATA.
A YUKATA is a kind of Japanese traditional attir, KIMONO.
It is made up by a light and thin cloth,
and usually used for summer wear.
For the other use,
in the Japanese style hotel,
it is used for a nightwear.

若い女の子も踊ります。
最近は小学生の女の子の間でも浴衣が流行しており、
盆踊り、お祭り、花火大会など
日本の夏の伝統行事の時には
多くの子どもたちがおしゃれな浴衣を
積極的に着ています。
このようなゆかたは寝巻きには使いません。

Young girls also dance the Bon dancing.
Recently a YUKATA become popular
among the primary school girls.
They enjoy dressing fasionable YUKATA
at the Japanese traditional events
like the Bon dancing, a shrine fair,
and a fireworks display.
Those kind of YUKATA is diffrent from the YUKATA
which is used for nightwear.

ここからは屋台を４件、紹介しましょう。
屋台とは食べ物やおもちゃを売る簡易なお店です。
おまつりなど人が集まるイベントでは、
屋台はかかせないアイテムです。

Now, I introduce you four YATAIs.
A YATAI is a stall which sells foods and toys.
It is nessesary for the event
that many people gather like a festival.
It is not too much to say that
the festival wouldn’t be perfect
without YATAIs.

これは氷屋さんです。
雪のように細かく削った氷に
好きなシロップをかけます。
赤、青、黄色、緑、ピンク、白、紫…
いちご、レモン、メロン、もも、抹茶、コーラ…
さまざまな色と味があります。

This is a flaver shaved ice stall.
You can put favorite flaver syrups
on the shaved ice like a snow.
Red, blue, yellow, green, pink, white, purple….
A strawberry, a lemon, a melon, a peach,
a green tea, coke…
There are many colors and many flavers syrups.

神社の柱に座って子ども達が
けずった氷を食べています。

Children are eating the shaved ice
sitting on a pillar of the shrine.

これはスーパーボールすくいです。
水槽にモーターで水流を作り、
その上にたくさんのちいさくてカラフルなボールを
浮かべて流しています。
どうやら大きなスプーンのようなもので
ボールをすくうようです。
すくってもよい数はあらかじめ決まっています。

This is the scoopling balls.
Many little and colorful balls
are floating on the current
by a motor in the little pool.
Players scoop them by a kind of big spoon.
But there is a limit to the number of balls
that players are allowed to get.

これはやきそば屋さんです。
やきそばとは
麺と野菜をソース味でいためた料理です。
屋台の中では定番中の定番です。

This is a YAKISOBA scall.
A YAKISOBA is fried noodles and vegetables
with soace.
This is the most popular YATAI food.

これはくじびき屋さんです。
番号が書いてあるカードを箱の中から一つ選びます。
すると
その番号のおもちゃがもらえる仕組みになっています。

This is a lot scall.
Players choose a number card
and get the toy of that number.

ほら、見てください！
女の子達がゆかたを着ておしゃれをして
盆踊りをしたり、おしゃべりを楽しむのに対し、
男の子達は洋服でやってきて、
暗がりで走り回っています。
この男の子達は石垣の灯篭の上に
登っていますね。

Look!
Girls dress the YUKATA
and enjoy dancing the Bon dance or chatting,
in contrast,
boys come as they are and running
and playing in the dark.
These boys clime the stone lantern
on the stone fence.

彼らはさきほどのくじびき屋さんで手に入れた
ビニール製の剣で
「チャンバラごっこ」をしているのです。
チャンバラごっことは
サムライや忍者のまねをする
日本の子どもの伝統的な遊びです。

hey are playing CHAMBARA with the plastic sword
which they get at the lot scall.
CHAMBARA is a playing at a samurai or a ninja duel
with a pretended sword,
that is the Japanese traditional play.

さて、盆踊りとチャンバラごっこに疲れて
家に帰ると
お母さんがスイカを切って
待っていてくれます。
スイカも日本の夏の風物詩です。
このように、
夏休みの子ども達は
いつもよりちょっと遅くまで起きて
夏の夜を楽しむのです。

When Children get home getting tired
from dancing or playing CHAMBARA,
their mother is waiting and cut a water melon.
A water melon is also a kind of
Japanese summer things.

Like this,
Children in summer vacation sit up
a little later than usual
and enjoy their summer night.
